Mastering the difference between leadership and management
It is a common belief that management and leadership are the same role. While it is common that a manager also plays the part of leaders, these two roles are truly separate in function and in the way add to the success of an orginization. To understand the difference between management and leadership becomes more effective in helping others to see the road ahead.
To understand the difference between management and leadership, consider the construction of a new road. To build that road there are workers, machinery and equipment which are all essential in the construction of the road. Managers help ensure those who, machine operators and equipment work together as efficiently as possible. A manager makes sure that employees are well trained, motivated, rested and who know what they should do. The manager does the same thing with the tools and machines to make sure they are working properly and that workers are able to use efficiently and safely. This is the role of management. On the other hand, a leader ensures that the road is going in the right direction before the construction starts. That leader also monitors conditions in new situations to ensure that road construction is still the right one and is still going in the right direction.
How does this affect you as a leader? You're spending your time managing people when you should be making sure that the road ahead is what I want to be? Pretending to be an effective leader you must present a clear vision and a path that you are willing to walk on first. While there are times when it is appropriate for a leader to fill a management role, it is essential to understand the difference between leadership and management in order to be effective, no matter which role you happen to fill in a given time. If you are a leader supervising managers, it is important to provide them with the proper perspective so that they can be effective in their management role. Do not manage the managers. Guide them.
If you're not in a formal leadership role, it is also important to understand that when a leadership opportunity arises there is a difference between being a leader and manage the effort. Even if one ends to fill both series of shoes is important to understand the difference of roles in order to fill in an effective way. If, however, you learn to drive, showing people walking down the right path, it becomes a natural leader and will be able to help many others find success how to make your staff .......
